Lake Wylie South Carolina
Lake Wylie was named after Dr. W. Gil Wylie, who was responsible for organizing the Catawba Power Company, a predecessor of Duke Energy. The man-made lake was first formed in 1904 and is the oldest and largest of 11 lakes in the Catawba River Basin. Lake Wylie has 325 miles of shoreline, and stretches from the Mountain Island Dam, south of Mountain Island Lake in North Carolina to the Wylie dam on the south end of the lake. The average depth of the lake is just over 20 feet.
Lake Wylie's location on both the South Carolina and North Carolina borders makes it a common recreational destination for residents to nearby cities including Charlotte, Fort Mill, Tega Cay, and Rock Hill. Just 17 miles from one of the nation's fastest growing hubs for industry, commerce and finance, the commute to uptown Charlotte is made by many Lake Wylie residents.
All around Lake Wylie, residents are blessed with a plethora of recreational activities, whether you like to get out on the water or play a round of golf, rest assured it can be done in Lake Wylie.
