York is the county seat of York County—a welcoming, fast-growing community where historic character meets modern living. With relatively affordable homes and convenient access to Rock Hill and Charlotte, North Carolina, York appeals to people looking for a small-town atmosphere within reach of major destinations.
A town rich in history
Founded as Yorkville in 1785, York became the county seat that same year and was incorporated in 1841. The town was renamed York in 1915. During the Revolutionary War, the area was close to the Battle of Kings Mountain and the Battle of Williamson’s Plantation.
In 1976, York’s downtown was designated a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Spanning approximately 340 acres, the district includes more than 180 historic buildings and landmarks.
A convenient place to call home
York offers a range of established neighborhoods and newer communities, with amenities and home features for a variety of lifestyles. Residents can enjoy local attractions and outdoor recreation, while destinations such as the Catawba River, Carowinds and Uptown Charlotte are within reach. The area is also served by York School District One.
